ALPHA PAIN CLINIC
Objectives
1. The main objective of Alpha Pain Clinic is providing good quality life to patients and their families by extending Palliative Care without discrimination irrespective of race, religion, caste, creed or political affiliation.
2. Patients suffering from incurables diseases and those who are permanently bedridden should be able to enjoy life in their homes receiving medication for their physical illnesses and rehabilitation to support them financially and socially. Training of Volunteers from their local community to take care of their emotional, social, financial and spiritual problems.
3. Ensuring community participation by organizing and training Community Volunteers who regularly visit the patients helping them take care of the problems faced by the patients and their families.
CONCEPTS
Palliative Care Services
* Providing home care involving doctors, nurses and community volunteers
* Providing medical support such as Day Care in the Clinic in cases where necessary.
* In-patient hospital facility for symptom control and relief.
* Arranging rehabilitation by empowering the patient / family.
* Involvement of a team of various specialists such as oncologists, neurologists, gynaecologists, physiotherapists, urologists, ophthalmologists, orthopaedic specialists, psychiatrists , etc.
* Providing support to the family even after death of the patient
* Ensuring that the patient is not abandoned by the family.
Centre of Excellence
Organising a faculty to decide the course material for training sessions
Liaison with Universities for recognition for the courses offered.
Conducting training courses for doctors, nurses and volunteers in Palliative Care and to issue certificates
Conducting researches and studies
To conduct seminars and workshops involving national and international faculties.
Curative Treatment
1. Making available the prepared data bank of treatment facilities available.
2. Arranging examination by Oncologists
3. Registration of prospective donors desirous of sponsoring treatment expenses
4. Referring the patient to the hospitals having relevant facility
5. Providing all necessary help for taking appointments and offer assistance for travelling and even for hospitalisation
Prevention and Early Detection
Other objectives of Alpha Pain Clinic are conducting projects aimed at enhancing awareness about factors contributing to diseases such as smoking, chewing, alcohol consumption , etc by conducting Cancer Awareness Public Meetings and campaigns and camps in co-ordination with Alpha Support Groups and Alpha Chapters
Link Centres
Alpha Pain Clinic has already set up Link Centres in various parts of Kerala State, India in coordination with local chapters and similar centres. Alpha Link Centres now offers home care, out-patient consultation and day-care.
Alpha Pain Clinic has a team of trained volunteers, carers, nurses and doctors who work tirelessly in the field offering services to the needy.
Information Desk
Alpha Pain Clinic has an information desk to answer queries and to provide information. Alpha Pain Clinic also has a data bank of treatment facilities available in India and elsewhere and extends its assistance in providing cost estimate and logistics support.
Strategy
Alpha Pain Clinic enjoys technical support from Institute of Palliative Medicine, Calicut, Kerala State, India. Wherever it is required, Alpha does not hesitate in seeking support from similar institutions elsewhere in the world.
While trying to improve the quality of life of those having incurable deceases, all efforts are also exerted to save the lives of patients identified curable.
Alpha Pain Clinic , at the time of inception, had sought the co-operation of eminent medical professionals including oncologists, anaesthetists, surgeons, gynaecologists and social workers, who have most graciously accepted to contribute their services for the noble cause and devote their valuable time for the same.
Management
Alpha Pain Clinic has its own Management structure and is an entity separate from Alpha Charitable Trust, but functions under the umbrella of Alpha Charitable Trust. Alpha Charitable Trust nominates Directors of the Pain Clinic with executive powers for two-year tenure. At the end of the tenure the directors are automatically re-nominated or retired in case any director wishes to do so.
The Directors conduct meetings as needed. The minimum quorum for the meetings is three. The Chief Medical Officer, Programme Coordinator and Public Relations Officer of the Clinic attend all such meetings and are responsible for implementing the decisions of the Board.
Alpha Pain Clinic works from 9am to 5pm with facilities for out-patient consultation, treatment, day care, laboratory, pharmacy , etc. The services include in-patient hospital facility as well. An ambulance is on stand-by as part of the 24-hour functioning system.
Services of visiting Consultants are made available as per pre-arranged schedule.
An auditorium for 150 people has been planned to be built beside the Clinic for regular meetings.
Staff Pattern
The Clinic employs resident doctors to work full time and utilises the services of eminent doctors specialized in Palliative Medicine. The Clinic employs doctors, nurses and paramedical staff, all trained in palliative-care, administrative and other staff members. Private practice of resident doctors and nurses is not allowed.
In addition, the Clinic has visiting medical consultants and specialists in various specialties.
Operation
Alpha Pain Clinic is functioning at Edamuttam village, off National Highway 17. Edamuttam is centrally located in Thrissur District in Kerala State,India
Alpha Pain Clinic works in complete co-ordination and co-operation with similar centres operating in Kerala State, India and other parts of the world.

Fees
Palliative medication, consultation, nursing care, home care and procedure/ services provided by Alpha Pain Clinic are free of any charge to the patients. Cost of non-palliative medicines for poor patients are borne by sponsors.
Alpha Pain Clinic is not responsible for the cost involved for treatment in other medical facilities and hospitals in case any patient decides to avail such services while receiving palliative care from Alpha.
