COMMUNITY BASED ACTIVITIES

REHABILITATION MEASURES
The significance of social support in rehabilitation of the patients and their families has been very often conveniently undermined. In the United Kingdom, where the concept of palliative care originated, support is extended by affluent people contributing the lions share and the Government supports with grants as well. This is not the case with India, where sadly the Government support is lacking. The patients and their family members must be able to do some kind of useful work and earn their living. Above all this will instil a feeling of confidence in the patient that despite the limitations imposed by the disease he/she / she is still an earning member of the family. The sense of frustration and isolation that eat into his / her vitals and which make psycho-social inroads into the children can be commendably mitigated thus.

ALPHA SAKTHI
Alpha Sakthi Self Help Groups comprising of patients, family members, volunteers and pensioners are making an honest attempt to provide answers to the rehabilitation needs of the   patients. ‘Alpha Kuda’ is presently providing rehabilitation to a good number of families. Other products such as coir and garments are being studied. Alpha Sakthi Rehabilitation programmes of the concerned panchayath area are managed by the local chapters

ALPHA CHAPTERS
Alpha is in the process of setting up maximum possible number of local chapters in the panchayats and municipalities of Thrissur district. Alpha chapters are entrusted to understand the emotional, spiritual, social and financial problems faced by the patients and the families and to find a solution locally. The Volunteer Coordinators of Alpha Community Division are available for any assistance required by the chapters.
Alpha Chapters arrange awareness classes at Public Places, Clubs and Educational Institutions.

AWARENESS CLASSES AND VOLUNTEER TRAINING
The awareness classes conducted regularly by Alpha play a pivoted role in ensuring community participation in palliative care. Motivated by these classes, many individuals have come forward to undergo volunteer training at Alpha and consequently work for patients who register their names.

ALPHA KALA VEDI
Alpha KalaJadha sponsored by Alpha Kalavedi supports the awareness mission.

ALPHA SCHOLARSHIP
Alpha Pain Clinic caters to the educational needs of the children of patients by offering scholarship from 1st standard to professional courses level.

ALPHA EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH SURVEY
Alpha conducts Educational Research - oriented surveys involving almost all its registered patients; primarily to assess the quality of service Alpha has been providing and to study the specific needs of the patient and the family. Surveys are conducted on the presumption that the results will open up new vistas and bring to light other unidentified grievous aspects related to palliative care in our country.
